Schools' involvement 2013

There are 4 ways of getting involved:

1. Book a visit for your school.

2. 'Design a banner' competition.

3. 'Design a musical instrument' competition.

4. 'Open for all music and making' workshops.

1. Book a visit for your school.

Ideally, we would like to visit your school twice, once before summer half term and once after, closer to the parade, 7th July 2013.

We can do a short visit (during an assembly) or we can offer a longer interactive presentation. For both, there is no charge for the school. The presentations will be run by Louis Robinson and Dan Haywood.

  • Short visit: We will introduce the parade to the school, a brief description of what is going to happen on the day, why it is important to participate, and the enviromental issues that this event is trying to tackle. We will talk as well about the two competitions, prizes and our mascot, Palito.

  • Longer workshop (45 min): In addition to what we would do in a short visit, we will discuss in more depth our environment looking at some of the different ways to keep our community clean. We will ask children about recycling and if they have ever thought of making musical instruments out of recycled material. We will then introduce them to the children of Cateura, Paraguay and we will present some ideas and instruments we have made. Also children will practise some basic rhythms by clapping or drumming and sing basic chants. These will be used in the parade and we are encouraging schools to create their own for the day.

2. Design a banner competition

Please download the entry form from the bottom of this page. You can run the activity during school time or send the form in the children's book bags. Either way, we would like to receive the children's designs by 24th May 2013. The posta
l address is 19 Homer Street, Balsall Heath, B12 9RA. We would appreciate if the school could gather all returned forms and send them to us by post. Or we can can collect them when we visit your school.

We have a great prize lined up for this competition. The children who win will be inviting his/her classroom to a guided visit to Birmingham City Council Waste center. There they will understand how rubbish is recycled, and the importance of doing recycling at home.
